Worms and Flowers

Squash Flowers and Summer

Posted in Garden by Lzyjo on December 24, 2008

It finally feels like Summer. Weather-wise it has been a really strange year. Normally it’s blazing hot before the end of May, but this year it been literally blowing hot and cold. There have been some hot days, but it is still going down to the lower 60s and 50s.

Just over the night my #1 watermelon has grown so much! Aww, he’s so cute. It looks like a big water balloon filling up.

Ah, the watermelon patch, there are at least four watermelons now and tons of flowers, which the white moths are having a blast visiting.

The garden looked so alive this morning at 8 o’clock. All of the yellow squash flowers were open and there were hordes of moths hovering over to make sure everything gets pollinated.

I love the yellow color of the squash flowers. They look like little bits of sunshine strewn throughout the garden.

Here is a flower cluster on the ridgegourd. I have never seen anything like this. I wonder which ones are male and female. These appear to be male flowers, with a long stem behind the flower rather than an immature fruit. There is also a small specialized leaf behind the flower.

I’m thrilled with this variety of heirloom lettuce, Merveille de Quatre Saisons. The blushing leaves on the seedlings are just beautiful.

It’s a lot of work…..

…Eating all these veggies!
